EU Revises Arctic Strategy Amid Growing Russia, US Pressure

The European Commission has unveiled a new Arctic strategy prioritizing security and resilience, alongside climate change, economic prosperity, and community opportunities. It proposes a maritime security hub for information sharing and monitoring, aiming to track shadow fleets, illegal fishing, and improve search and rescue. The EU also plans to expand icebreaker capacity and invest in a fibre-optic cable linking Greenland to Europe, reducing dependence on the US. European leaders view Russia as a significant threat, with Finland calling the Arctic a strategic frontier.
