Supreme Court to Hear Case on 135-Year-Old Central Secretariat Library Relocation

The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the proposed relocation of Delhi's 135-year-old Central Secretariat Library, which houses over 8.5 lakh books. The library faces uncertainty as its current building, Shastri Bhawan, is slated for demolition under the Central Vista redevelopment plan. Reports indicate that only two rooms have been allocated in the new Kartavya Bhawan-2 complex, which the Culture Ministry deems inadequate. The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has clarified that space has been earmarked under the Kartavya Path redevelopment plan, with construction underway.

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने दिल्ली की 135 साल पुरानी सेंट्रल सेक्रेटेरिएट लाइब्रेरी के प्रस्तावित स्थानांतरण का स्वतः संज्ञान लिया है, जिसमें 8.5 लाख से ज़्यादा किताबें हैं। लाइब्रेरी अनिश्चितता का सामना कर रही है क्योंकि इसका मौजूदा भवन, शास्त्री भवन, सेंट्रल विस्टा पुनर्विकास योजना के तहत गिराया जाना है। रिपोर्टों से पता चलता है कि नए कर्तव्य भवन-2 परिसर में केवल दो कमरे आवंटित किए गए हैं, जिसे संस्कृति मंत्रालय अपर्याप्त मानता है। केंद्रीय आवास और शहरी मामलों के मंत्रालय ने स्पष्ट किया है कि कर्तव्य पथ पुनर्विकास योजना के तहत जगह आवंटित की गई है, जिसका निर्माण कार्य चल रहा है।
