Space Rocks Reveal Early Solar System Separation
Times of India · science
Early solar system worlds formed from a filtered mix, with heat-forged chondrules making up 83% to 92% of their composition. Aerodynamic sorting separated these rocky grains from fine matrix containing water ice and organic molecules, leaving early planetesimals unusually poor in volatile-rich dust. Researchers studied iron meteorites, finding sulfur and iron oxidation measurements indicated only 8% to 17% matrix material. This sorting began almost immediately after the solar system's formation.
