This visit comes after Germany's foreign minister previously called for de-escalation in talks with her Russian counterpart, a stance that drew criticism from Russia's Sergei Lavrov. Moscow had also recently advised foreign nationals and diplomats to depart Ukraine. Merz affirmed that Ukraine will require ongoing support from Germany.
