Lehmann Lovegrass Introduced to Arizona in 1932 Now Dominates Over 347,000 Acres
Hindustan Times · environment
Lehmann lovegrass, introduced to Arizona in 1932 from South Africa, was planted on over 172,000 acres by land managers between 1940 and 1980. By 1988, it had become a dominant species across approximately 347,000 acres, primarily in southeastern Arizona. Studies indicate the grass spreads effectively without livestock grazing and produces significantly more biomass than native grasses. Its proliferation has displaced native species and is predicted to decrease wildlife diversity and increase fire frequency, prompting caution for future introductions.
