Authorities in Arunachal Pradesh's Upper Siang district have banned assemblies of five or more people following escalating protests against the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project. This order came after four protesters were detained under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. Residents have consistently opposed the 11,000 MW hydropower plant, which threatens to submerge 27 villages, including the district headquarters. Civil society groups have condemned alleged police brutality and demanded the release of detainees, a withdrawal of security forces, and a halt to dam viability studies.
