Protect 5,000-Year-Old Rock Art In Tamil Nadu

Times of India · environment

An organization called Cheral has urged the Tamil Nadu government to protect the ancient rock paintings at Moonandipatti in Theni district. These prehistoric paintings, estimated to be around 5,000 years old, are facing damage from natural weathering and human vandalism. Cheral has requested statutory protection under the Tamil Nadu Ancient and Historical Monuments Act. Without immediate conservation, these irreplaceable cultural records risk irreversible loss due to visitor scribbling and exposure to the elements. The site also features images of animals and human figures, some depicting combat scenes.
