Louisiana Red Swamp Crayfish Introduced to Spain in 1973, Now a Major European Invasive Species

Hindustan Times · environment

Introduced to Spain from Louisiana in 1973, the red swamp crayfish has become a significant invasive species across Europe. Initial introductions occurred in the Guadiana and Guadalquivir river basins, but genetic evidence suggests additional, separate introduction routes, including links to Kenya and Malta, possibly via the pet trade. This species is now the most widely distributed freshwater crayfish globally. It poses a major ecological threat, carrying diseases that decimate native crayfish populations and damaging aquatic ecosystems and agricultural systems by feeding on crops and burrowing into drainage systems.
