Karnataka Govt Assures HC No Action Against Multiplexes Challenging 2% Cess

The Karnataka government has assured the High Court that no coercive action will be taken against multiplexes challenging the constitutional validity of a 2% cess on cinema tickets. The cess, imposed under the Karnataka Cine and Cultural Activists (Welfare) Act, 2024, came into effect. Petitioners, including PVR INOX and the Multiplex Association of India, have challenged specific sections of the Act and its rules. The High Court has adjourned the hearing to, granting the state government two weeks to file its objections.

कर्नाटक सरकार ने हाई कोर्ट को भरोसा दिलाया है कि सिनेमा टिकटों पर 2% सेस की संवैधानिक वैधता को चुनौती देने वाले मल्टीप्लेक्स के खिलाफ कोई जबरन कार्रवाई नहीं की जाएगी। कर्नाटक सिने एंड कल्चरल एक्टिविस्ट्स (वेलफेयर) एक्ट, 2024 के तहत लगाया गया यह सेस लागू हो गया है। PVR INOX और मल्टीप्लेक्स एसोसिएशन ऑफ इंडिया सहित याचिकाकर्ताओं ने एक्ट और उसके नियमों के विशिष्ट वर्गों को चुनौती दी है। हाई कोर्ट ने सुनवाई स्थगित कर दी है, राज्य सरकार को अपनी आपत्तियां दाखिल करने के लिए दो सप्ताह का समय दिया है।
