Black Mamba Snake Gets Its Name From Its Mouth's Interior
Times of India · science
The Black Mamba snake, scientifically known as Dendroaspis polylepis, is native to sub-Saharan Africa and is one of the continent's most formidable reptiles. Despite its name, its body is typically grey, olive, or brown, with a lighter underside, not glossy black. The snake earns its name from the striking inky, blue-black interior of its mouth, which it reveals when feeling threatened as a defensive display. This distinctive feature, confirmed by the South African National Biodiversity Institute, is the widely accepted explanation for its fearsome moniker.
