South Korea plans to extend its anti-piracy operations to waters closer to the Strait of Hormuz, following pressure from the United States. The Ministry of National Defense will seek parliamentary approval to expand the mandate of the Cheonghae unit, a naval task force. This expansion would increase the unit's operational radius and add personnel and a maritime patrol aircraft. Officials stated the mission will remain noncombat, strictly protecting South Korean citizens and economic interests, and will operate independently under South Korean command.
