A federal court has ordered the Texas Department of Criminal Justice to air-condition all state prisons by December 31, 2029. The ruling came after a lawsuit filed by the Lioness Justice Impacted Women’s Alliance and other groups, arguing extreme heat violated prisoners' rights. Approximately 88,697 incarcerated individuals were housed in units without air conditioning. This decision aims to prevent suffering and potential deaths from extreme temperatures during Texas summers.
