New Lizard Species Discovered At Over 15,750 Feet In Peru's Andes
Times of India · science
Scientists have identified a new lizard species, Liolaemus archipensis, living at over 4,800 metres (15,750 feet) in Peru's Andes mountains. This small reptile, measuring six to eight centimetres, possesses unique white scales and patterned markings for camouflage in the harsh, rocky landscape. Despite the extreme altitude, the lizard has a varied diet of vegetation and small arthropods. This discovery highlights the remarkable biodiversity and specialized adaptations found in remote high-elevation ecosystems, adding to Peru's already extensive reptile diversity.
