Oprah Winfrey's substantial $12 million donation in 2013 continues to significantly support public discussions on African American history and culture. This gift, along with a prior $1 million contribution, made her the largest individual donor to the National Museum of African American History and Culture during its development. The funds helped bolster a $500 million fundraising campaign, with half from federal sources and half from private donations. In recognition, the museum named its 350-seat performance space the Oprah Winfrey Theater, which hosts various cultural events.
