Sea Turtles Return to Samoa's Nu'utele Island After Invasive Species Removal
Times of India - India · india
Sea turtles are nesting again on Samoa's Nu'utele Island after a two-year conservation project successfully removed invasive rats and feral pigs. The uninhabited island, a Key Biodiversity Area, had suffered from damaged food chains and destroyed native plants due to introduced animals. Since the removal campaign ended in May 2026, native vegetation is regrowing, and local farming families can now cultivate crops without loss. Native bird species are also experiencing population growth, with new nests found for the Shy Ground Dove, Samoan Starling, Samoan Flycatcher, and Samoan Whistler.
