Florida Researchers Turn Toy Rabbits Into Robotic Python Lures

Times of India · environment

Florida researchers have repurposed toy rabbits into robotic decoys to help control the invasive Burmese python population in the Everglades. These solar-powered robots mimic the movement and warmth of real prey, drawing snakes towards camera-monitored pens for easier detection and removal by contractors. This innovative approach aims to overcome the challenge of finding well-camouflaged pythons in dense vegetation, protecting native wildlife. The project, led by Professor Robert McCleery, builds on previous experiments using live rabbits, seeking a more efficient and less labor-intensive solution to a persistent ecological problem.
