India Finalises New Investment Treaty Model

India is in the final stages of approving a new model Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) aimed at streamlining negotiations and protecting investors. This revised treaty, expected to be cleared by the Union cabinet soon, will replace the contentious 2015 version. Key changes include reducing the arbitration period to one year from five, while safeguarding India's sovereign rights on taxation. The new BIT will be used in upcoming trade agreements with countries like Australia and Canada, and potentially with the UK and EU.

भारत जल्द ही एक नया द्विपक्षीय निवेश संधि (BIT) मॉडल मंज़ूर करने वाला है। इसका मकसद बातचीत को आसान बनाना और निवेशकों की सुरक्षा करना है। यह नया समझौता 2015 के पुराने और विवादित मॉडल की जगह लेगा। इसमें मध्यस्थता की अवधि घटाकर एक साल कर दी गई है, और भारत के कर संबंधी संप्रभु अधिकारों की रक्षा भी की गई है। यह नया BIT ऑस्ट्रेलिया और कनाडा जैसे देशों के साथ भविष्य के व्यापार समझौतों में इस्तेमाल होगा।
