Rare Caribbean Snake Population Soars After Conservation Efforts

Once critically endangered, the Antiguan racer snake population has seen a remarkable recovery. In 1995, only 51 of these rare snakes survived on Great Bird Island. Through dedicated conservation efforts over 21 years, including removing invasive black rats and translocating snakes to three other islands, the population grew to over 1,100 by 2016. This success demonstrates the effectiveness of targeted conservation strategies in saving species from the brink of extinction.
