Andhra Pradesh Fishers Demand Better Weather Alerts, Compensation During Bans

Small-scale marine fishers from six Andhra Pradesh districts have demanded enhanced early warning systems for weather and compensation during fishing bans. They also seek legal protection for traditional fishing grounds, requesting a model bill similar to the Forest Rights Act for enforceable tenure rights. Participants highlighted threats from climate change, cyclones, and coastal development to their livelihoods, fish availability, and safety at sea. The fishers also called for improved weather forecasts, boat-specific wind alerts, and prior consultation for displacement due to projects or climate impacts.
