These pipelines supplied gas to Germany before Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The discussions aim to allow US investors to profit from energy flows to Europe post-war. However, a US official stated that such a deal is unlikely in the medium term due to sanctions and German opposition. Germany has found alternative gas sources and does not desire a reopening of the pipelines.
