India's MTF Book Heavily in Smallcaps, Nithin Kamath Warns of Liquidity Risks

Economic Times Markets · stocks

Zerodha founder Nithin Kamath has raised concerns over the significant concentration of India's margin trading facility (MTF) book in small-cap stocks, which he warns poses liquidity risks. Data reveals that approximately 50% of the funded amount in the MTF book is allocated to small-cap stocks, with large-caps at 32% and mid-caps at 18%. Kamath highlighted that liquidity in these smaller companies tends to dry up first during market downturns or sideways movements. This exposure to less liquid stocks could lead to amplified losses for investors when market conditions weaken.
