Introduced Sweetclover Linked To Higher Native Seedling Deaths In Alaska
Hindustan Times · environment
White sweetclover, introduced to Alaska in 1916 for roadside revegetation, has spread into river floodplains. A study comparing areas with and without the plant found approximately 50% greater mortality among native seedlings in areas where sweetclover was present. These areas also had fewer recruiting native species and less light reaching the seedlings. Researchers suggest that the dense patches formed by sweetclover may contribute to seedling death, potentially by reducing light and impacting winter survival. Active management of sweetclover is recommended to preserve plant diversity in Alaska.
