A Florida cybersecurity expert, Zohar Pinhasi, faces fraud charges for allegedly deceiving clients by secretly paying hackers while claiming his company could decrypt ransomware attacks without ransom. Prosecutors allege his company, MonsterCloud LLC, collected over $19 million from victims and paid over $8 million in ransom payments to cybercriminals. Pinhasi reportedly charged clients significantly more than the ransom amounts, pocketing the difference. He is accused of lacking the specialized technology he advertised, instead negotiating with attackers for decryption keys.
