Scientists are exploring the bacteria within the human gut as a novel source for new drug development, building on a century of microbe-derived medicines. Recent studies suggest specific gut bacteria and the molecules they produce could offer new treatments for conditions like high cholesterol, age-related memory loss, and even cancer immunotherapy response. For instance, the bacterium Bacteroides uniformis produces pentadecanoic acid, which functions similarly to statins by blocking cholesterol production in the liver.
