Tamil Nadu Byelections: Only Two Constituencies Go To Polls Out Of Seven Vacant Seats

Tamil Nadu is holding byelections in only two constituencies, Dharapuram and Madurantakam, out of seven vacant Assembly seats. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has cited pending election petitions as the reason for not holding polls in the other five constituencies. The ECI stated that holding elections while petitions are undecided could lead to an anomalous situation where a constituency might be represented by two individuals. Byelections are generally required within six months of a seat falling vacant, except under exceptional circumstances.

तमिलनाडु में सात खाली विधानसभा सीटों में से केवल दो निर्वाचन क्षेत्रों, धरपुरम और मदुरंतकम में उपचुनाव हो रहे हैं। भारत निर्वाचन आयोग (ECI) ने बाकी पांच निर्वाचन क्षेत्रों में चुनाव नहीं कराने का कारण लंबित चुनाव याचिकाओं को बताया है। ECI ने कहा कि याचिकाओं के अनिर्णीत रहते हुए चुनाव कराने से एक असामान्य स्थिति पैदा हो सकती है जहाँ एक निर्वाचन क्षेत्र का प्रतिनिधित्व दो व्यक्तियों द्वारा किया जा सकता है। विशेष परिस्थितियों को छोड़कर, आमतौर पर सीट खाली होने के छह महीने के भीतर उपचुनाव कराना आवश्यक होता है।
