Mandatory 10% Health Co-Pay Could Raise Patient Bills To 19%

Business Standard · stocks

General insurance companies are proposing a mandatory 10 per cent co-payment on retail health policies, which could reduce premiums but increase policyholders' out-of-pocket expenses to 15-19 per cent of hospital bills. This proposal, aimed at curbing 'moral hazard' by making patients and hospitals more price-sensitive, is targeted for implementation from January 1, 2027. Insurers believe it will discourage inflated costs and unnecessary treatments. However, the move requires approval from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai) and faces potential customer pushback.

Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai)
