India and Japan are deepening their partnership with a 10-trillion yen investment target and an Economic Security Initiative covering critical sectors like semiconductors and clean energy. Despite strong diplomatic ties, economic engagement remains underdeveloped, with Japan sourcing less than 1% of its merchandise imports from India. The countries aim to strengthen local supplier bases and reduce reliance on single points of failure, particularly concerning critical minerals and chipmaking equipment. New cooperation on batteries, mobility, and defence co-development projects are also underway.
