Kerala's courts are officially retiring the centuries-old practice of tom-tomming and kinnam mutti vilambaram to announce property attachment proceedings. The Kerala High Court's Rules Committee has decided to remove this provision, marking the end of an archaic custom. This change follows a campaign by activist Boban Mattumanta, who argued that modern communication methods are more effective. The practice, originating from princely rule and continued under British law, involved drumbeats and metal plate sounds to inform the public. Even in 2022, Palakkad courts collected over ₹56,000 in tom-tom charges.
