Mahatma Gandhi's Evolution From Racist Views To Anti-Racist Stance
Hindustan Times · interesting
Biographers have explored unresolved questions about Mahatma Gandhi's views, particularly concerning his early years in South Africa during the 1890s and 1900s. Scholars Ashwin Desai and Ghulam Vahed noted Gandhi used derogatory terms for Black Africans and expressed reluctance for Indians and Africans to be grouped together. Renowned biographer Ram Guha agrees, describing the young Gandhi as an 'unthinking racist' prejudiced against Africans. However, Guha also highlights Gandhi's evolution, stating he transformed from a racist into a non-racist and ultimately an anti-racist, a change worthy of commendation.
