SC Refuses Interim Stay on UPI Merchant Charges

The Supreme Court has refused to grant an immediate stay on charges imposed on select UPI merchant transactions. However, the court has issued notices to the Central government, NPCI, and other relevant parties, seeking their responses within four weeks. The petition challenges the validity of new merchant fees applied to select UPI payments exceeding ₹2,000. The government stated that these charges, effective, will not affect 96% of transactions and are a settlement fee between payment aggregators and banks, not a tax.

मर्चेंट शुल्क पर सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने अंतरिम रोक से इनकार किया

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने चुनिंदा UPI मर्चेंट ट्रांज़ैक्शन पर लगाए गए शुल्कों पर तत्काल रोक लगाने से इनकार कर दिया है। हालांकि, कोर्ट ने केंद्र सरकार, NPCI और अन्य संबंधित पक्षों को नोटिस जारी कर चार हफ़्तों के भीतर जवाब मांगा है। यह याचिका ₹2,000 से ज़्यादा के चुनिंदा UPI भुगतानों पर लागू नए मर्चेंट शुल्क की वैधता को चुनौती देती है। सरकार ने कहा कि ये शुल्क, जो प्रभावी हैं, 96% ट्रांज़ैक्शन को प्रभावित नहीं करेंगे और ये पेमेंट एग्रीगेटर और बैंकों के बीच एक सेटलमेंट शुल्क हैं, कोई टैक्स नहीं।
