In June 1970, North Korea accorded a red-carpet welcome to three senior leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) – EMS Namboodiripad, Promode Dasgupta, and Puchalapalli Sundarayya. They received special treatment during their two-week visit, often accompanied by North Korea's nominal head of state, Choe Yong-gon. The significant attention given to the Indian delegation surprised both the Indian consulate in Pyongyang and the Soviet embassy. This visit highlights North Korea's efforts to cultivate relationships with foreign communist parties during the Cold War era.
