UK Watchdog Proposes Forcing Apple to Open iPhone Contactless Payments
Business Standard · business
The UK's antitrust regulator, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), is proposing to force Apple to open its iPhone contactless payment systems to rivals. The CMA's investigation found that Apple's fees and access rules for near field communication (NFC) technology risk hindering fintech innovation. Unlike in the EU, no rival wallet products have launched in the UK due to these restrictions. This move aims to boost competition and allow fintech firms like PayPal, Revolut, and Monzo to compete more effectively. Apple argues this would lower privacy and security protections.
