Exotic Primates Arrive In India, Welfare Concerns Rise

Five baby orangutans found abandoned in Odisha highlight a growing international wildlife trade, with India emerging as a destination. Obtaining young orangutans for the pet trade often results in the mother's death. Over 100 primates were among nearly 4,000 exotic animals seized in India in 2022. Repatriation is an option for seized orangutans and gibbons, but they may require significant rehabilitation before potential release into the wild.
