UK Police Facial Recognition Trial Scanned 500,000 Faces, Yielded One Wrong Alert
Times of India · technology
A six-month trial of live facial recognition technology by British Transport Police at London stations cost over £320,000. The system scanned more than 500,000 faces, comparing them against a police watchlist. During the trial, only one alert was generated, which was a false identification and did not lead to any arrest. Despite this, the BTP has extended the programme, sparking debate over its cost-effectiveness, accuracy, and privacy implications for public transport users.
