Gujarat Govt Defends Non-Veg Ban Near Somnath Temple
The Hindu · india
The Gujarat government has defended its ban on non-vegetarian food sales within 500 metres of the Somnath Temple, telling the High Court that business rights cannot override the pilgrimage site's sanctity. Six restaurant owners challenged the two-month-old ban, arguing they have operated legally for decades. The government stated that Somnath's religious significance outweighs commercial interests, comparing the restrictions to those in other holy towns. Restaurants can still serve vegetarian food or operate outside the notified zones.
