Telangana is projected to remain a rice-surplus state despite El Nino, though the extent of this surplus hinges on water availability for the upcoming irrigation season. Professor Jayashankar Telangana Agricultural University recommends a real-time rice-water dashboard to monitor reservoir levels and irrigation releases. The university estimates paddy production between 198 to 219 lakh metric tonnes, translating to 133 to 147 LMT of milled rice. This assessment is crucial given a past El Nino event in 2014-15 that saw a significant drop in rice production.
