Supreme Court stays bail for Shiv Sena corporator

The Supreme Court has stayed the Bombay High Court's order granting bail to Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre, aged 73. The court directed Mhatre to surrender within three days. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta emphasized that the medical fraternity cannot be assaulted. The Maharashtra government had challenged the High Court's bail order, citing Mhatre's antecedents. The Supreme Court previously expressed concern over assaults on doctors and hospital staff in Maharashtra, stating they should not be treated as routine law-and-order issues.
