RBI Governor: India Backs Blockchain Tech, Cautious on Cryptocurrencies

Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra stated on Saturday that India supports underlying technologies like distributed ledger and tokenisation but remains cautious about cryptocurrencies. Concerns include monetary sovereignty, policy, and capital flows, especially for emerging markets. While domestic payments are efficient, cross-border transactions present a challenge that central bank digital currencies could address. Malhotra also noted that rising global spending, partly due to AI, is contributing to hardening bond yields and increased debt.
