Supreme Court Stays Hanging of 2008 Gujarat Serial Blasts Convict

The Supreme Court has stayed the execution of the death penalty for Ahmed Bawa, an operative of the Indian Mujahideen convicted in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial bomb blasts. The apex court issued a notice to the Gujarat government on Bawa's plea challenging the Gujarat High Court's verdict, which had upheld his death sentence. The High Court had previously confirmed the death sentences of 38 IM operatives for the blasts that killed 56 people and injured over 200. The court cited the large number of casualties in its decision.

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने 2008 के अहमदाबाद सीरियल बम धमाकों के दोषी इंडियन मुजाहिदीन के ऑपरेटिव अहमद बावा की मौत की सज़ा पर रोक लगा दी है। सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने बावा की उस याचिका पर गुजरात सरकार को नोटिस जारी किया है जिसमें गुजरात हाई कोर्ट के फैसले को चुनौती दी गई थी। हाई कोर्ट ने उसकी मौत की सज़ा को बरकरार रखा था। हाई कोर्ट ने पहले 56 लोगों की मौत और 200 से ज़्यादा लोगों के घायल होने वाले धमाकों के लिए 38 आईएम ऑपरेटिव की मौत की सज़ा की पुष्टि की थी। कोर्ट ने अपने फैसले में हताहतों की बड़ी संख्या का हवाला दिया था।
