मद्रास हाई कोर्ट ने तमिलनाडु की 'वेट्टी पयनाम' योजना की संवैधानिक वैधता को चुनौती देने वाली एक रिट याचिका खारिज कर दी है, जो सरकारी बसों में रोज़ाना 84.32 लाख महिलाओं को मुफ्त यात्रा प्रदान करती है। एक निजी बस ऑपरेटर ने यह याचिका दायर की थी, जिसमें तर्क दिया गया था कि यह योजना निजी ऑपरेटरों को नुकसान पहुँचाती है। अदालत ने याचिकाकर्ता की राज्यव्यापी योजना को चुनौती देने की स्थिति पर सवाल उठाया और कहा कि याचिका एक घोषणा को लक्षित करती है, न कि उसके परिणामस्वरूप आए सरकारी आदेश को। याचिकाकर्ता के वकील ने अन्य कानूनी रास्ते तलाशने की स्वतंत्रता के साथ मामला वापस ले लिया।
