Uttarakhand's Hanging Glaciers Show Instability

Uttarakhand is home to 219 hanging glaciers, with a concerning one-third identified as unstable. These glaciers, situated on steep slopes, are inherently more prone to instability compared to those on valley floors. The Himalayan region's accelerated warming, exceeding the global average, is further exacerbating the precarious state of these ice formations, posing potential risks.

उत्तराखंड में 219 लटकते हुए ग्लेशियर हैं, जिनमें से एक तिहाई अस्थिर पाए गए हैं। ये ग्लेशियर खड़ी ढलानों पर होने के कारण, घाटी के तल पर मौजूद ग्लेशियरों की तुलना में ज़्यादा अस्थिर होते हैं। हिमालयी क्षेत्र में तेज़ी से बढ़ रही गर्मी, जो दुनिया के औसत से ज़्यादा है, इन बर्फ़ीली संरचनाओं की ख़तरनाक स्थिति को और बढ़ा रही है, जिससे जोखिम बढ़ गया है।
