Tamil Nadu Village Forgoes Diwali Firecrackers For Bats

TV9 Hindi · environment

In Tamil Nadu's Mayiladuthurai district, the village of Perambur has observed a unique Diwali tradition for over a century, abstaining from firecrackers. This practice is to protect hundreds of Indian Flying Foxes, a species of large fruit bats, residing in a 150-year-old banyan tree. Villagers believe the loud noise and smoke from fireworks are harmful to the bats. Instead, they celebrate by lighting diyas and offering prayers. This sensitivity towards wildlife is also seen in other nearby villages, highlighting a commitment to preserving animal habitats.
