Steep Medicine Margins Enable Malpractice, Says Pharmaceuticals Secretary

Times of India · health

Pharmaceuticals secretary Manoj Joshi has raised concerns over steep margins on medicines, stating they can influence product selection and lead to malpractice. He noted that hospitals sometimes favour expensive drugs with higher margins, and smaller manufacturers may push products with unusually high margins, potentially creating a nexus with doctors or retailers, especially in smaller towns. The government is tightening its oversight on healthcare players, including companies and hospitals, and has announced capping trade margins at 30% on all cancer drugs.
