Rare Moth-Lichen Camouflage Association Documented in Himachal Pradesh

A new study has identified the first known instance of a moth using the umbilicate lichen, Lasallia pertusa, for camouflage. This observation occurred in July 2025 within Himachal Pradesh's Kugti Wildlife Sanctuary at an elevation of approximately 3,200 meters. While moth-lichen camouflage is documented, this case involves a specific lichen growth form, expanding the known range of substrates used for insect concealment. Researchers suggest this finding highlights the ecological importance of seemingly inconspicuous lichens for animal survival strategies and may have evolutionary implications requiring further investigation.
