Dogs Catch Owner Yawns More Than Other Dogs, Study Finds

Hindustan Times · science

Researchers investigated why dogs yawn contagiously after their owners but rarely after other dogs. Studies comparing purebred wolves and wolf-dog crossbreeds suggest domestication has shifted dogs' focus. Purebred wolves copied yawns 41% of the time, while crossbreeds did so only 24% of the time. This indicates dogs evolved to be more aware of human behaviour, potentially diminishing their awareness of their own species. Social connection, not pack hierarchy, influenced who triggered yawns.
