In November 1888, 597 Indian men, women, and children departed for Guadeloupe, seeking to escape poverty through indentured labour. The voyage aboard the Nantes-Bordeaux steamship became an ordeal after a breakdown near Cape Guardafui, stranding passengers in Aden for a month. During this delay, many suffered from scurvy, and by the time the ship reached Guadeloupe, six individuals had died. Two more men reportedly died by jumping overboard, seemingly due to the hardships faced. This marked the beginning of their difficult experience in the French Caribbean.
