Marion Island's Cats Eradicated After Decades of Killing Seabirds

Hindustan Times · environment

In 1949, five cats were introduced to Marion Island to control mice, but they proliferated into a feral population. By the 1970s, an estimated 2,000 cats were killing approximately 450,000 seabirds annually, severely impacting burrowing petrel populations. Eradication efforts, including hunting and trapping, finally succeeded in 1991. While seabird burrow density increased by 56% by 2013, the recovery was modest, with mice now identified as a likely cause.
