Borrow Against Shares: Unlock Cash Without Selling Investments, Explained

Investors can now borrow money by pledging shares in their demat accounts without selling them, a facility known as Loans Against Shares (LAS). This allows individuals to access funds for short periods while retaining their long-term investments. The Reserve Bank of India has increased the overall borrowing ceiling against eligible securities to Rs 1 crore. However, lenders apply a loan-to-value (LTV) ratio, typically capping the loan amount at 60% of the pledged shares' market value. This provides liquidity without forcing investors to exit their stock holdings.
