RBI Tightens Rules on Rupee Derivatives, Widens 20% Cash Reserve Requirement

Economic Times · stocks

The Reserve Bank of India has tightened rules on rupee non-deliverable derivative contracts, restricting overseas clients to using them solely for hedging purposes. This measure also expands a 20% cash reserve requirement to banks' own rupee currency hedges. These actions are part of the central bank's recent efforts to support the rupee, which has experienced a decline due to high oil prices and capital outflows. Banks can now only offer these derivatives for hedging, and authorised dealers must maintain a foreign exchange risk reserve for specific derivative contracts.
