UPSC Celebrates 100 Years: From Foreign Roots to India's Constitutional Authority

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) will complete 100 years on October 1, 2026. Established in 1926, its origins were modest and foreign, with early examinations held only in London and favouring the British system. Initially an advisory body, it became a constitutional authority on January 26, 1950, with its independence safeguarded by the Constitution. The scale of its operations has grown immensely, with applications soaring from over 42,000 in 1950-51 to over 45 lakh in 2022-23.

यूनियन पब्लिक सर्विस कमीशन (UPSC) 1 अक्टूबर 2026 को 100 साल का हो जाएगा। 1926 में स्थापित, इसकी शुरुआत मामूली और विदेशी थी, शुरुआती परीक्षाएं केवल लंदन में होती थीं और ब्रिटिश सिस्टम को तरजीह दी जाती थी। शुरुआत में एक सलाहकार निकाय, यह 26 जनवरी 1950 को एक संवैधानिक प्राधिकरण बन गया, जिसकी स्वतंत्रता संविधान द्वारा सुरक्षित की गई थी। इसके संचालन का पैमाना बहुत बढ़ गया है, 1950-51 में 42,000 से अधिक आवेदनों से बढ़कर 2022-23 में 45 लाख से अधिक हो गए हैं।
